Aguada Fort was designed by Julio Simo in the late 17th century & built under the supervision of Viceroy Ruy Tavara in 1612. Known for its impressive architecture, the fort had 79 cannons & could store 2,376,000 gallons of water, making it one of the largest freshwater storage facilities in Asia during that time.
The fort was constructed to protect the Portuguese from attacks by the Dutch & Marathas in Goa. It also served as a key landmark for ships arriving from Europe & provided fresh water to passing ships.
The Portuguese military architecture of Fort Aguada was built using laterite stone, which adds to its historic charm. The fort’s walls stand 5 meters high & 1.3 meters thick, showcasing a remarkable Italian design.
Fort Aguada is split into two sections: the lower part served as a safe harbor for ships, while the upper part functioned as a fort. It includes a freshwater spring, citadel, moat, gunpowder room, & lighthouse. The upper section even has a secret escape route that was used during wars & emergencies.
Fort Aguada has many tales to tell, with its lighthouse in the upper section playing a key role in its history. This amazing four-story Portuguese lighthouse is the oldest in Asia. Located between the Mormugao Peninsula & Calangute Beach, it was originally built in 1864 on the western side of the hilltop. The lighthouse was later renovated & modernized in 1976, adding to its historical significance.
Built in 1612, one of Goa’s largest jails is a lasting symbol of the power of the Portuguese rulers. It was used during the rule of Salazar, Portugal’s 100th Prime Minister. The Aguada Fort Jail was in use until 2015. Today, the Goa government & tourism department have turned it into a heritage site & museum for visitors to explore.
