Alorna Castle, an archaeological site in North Goa, is situated on the banks of the Chapora River. Representing a symbol of grandeur and magnificence, this fort attracts many visitors throughout the year.
Address: PW24+35C, Alorna, Goa 403512
Located in Mapusa city, Goa, Alorna Fort was built by the Bhonsles, a fierce warrior dynasty from Sawantwadi that ruled several Indian kingdoms in the 17th century. The fort was constructed to defend against attacks from Maratha rulers along the Chapora River. Over three centuries old, it has been a witness to many battles against Portuguese invaders.
After the Bhonsles, the first intruder to take control of the fort was the Marquis of Alorna in 1746. Later, in 1781, a Portuguese ruler named Dom Frederico Guilherme attacked & seized the fort.
Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, many Portuguese rulers used Alorna Fort’s strategic position to shield themselves from Maratha attacks. This fort has endured various invasions over the years. The cannon station within Alorna Fort highlights the defensive strategies of the past. Archaeologists believe that the fort echoes the history of those who bravely fought against intruders.
The architecture of Alorna Fort was designed with a unique defense system to protect against Maratha attacks. Originally, there were about four cannon stations, but only two remain visible today. Inside the fort, just one building still stands, along with a deep well at its center. While the fort once featured multiple watchtowers, only two remain on the front side.
Surrounded by pretty natural beauty, the view of Alorna Fort in the evening is truly captivating. Green paddy fields & beautiful high plains can be seen all around the fort. Currently, it is listed as a protected monument by the Government of Goa & is undergoing renovation by the Archaeological Survey of India.
