Chapora Fort, located in Goa, India, was built in 1717 by Adil Shah of Bijapur. Its main purpose was to protect against Hindu raiders. Over the years, it was ruled by different powers & was besieged twice—first by Bhonsle in 1739 & later by Sambhaji, Shivaji’s son, in 1683.
In 1741, the Portuguese took control of Chapora Fort & made significant renovations during their rule. They carried out important repairs & added new features, such as bastions & a tunnel.
Chapora Fort is situated in a way that allows visitors to enjoy amazing panoramic views. Inside the fort, there used to be a church dedicated to St. Anthony. The fort’s design takes advantage of the natural shape of the hills, creating an uneven outer wall. The entrance gate is quite small, & the cannons placed throughout the fort are positioned to defend against any raiders from all directions.
