Bammons of Sancoale were the original owners of the island. However, in the late 1600s, it was raided by the Marathas, who gave all the control of the island to Sawant-Bhonsle of Sawantwadi. Later on, control of the island was shifted to the Portuguese under the act of Portuguese Viceroy Caetano de Mello e Castro.
