History Of Mormugao Fort

Fort Mormugao has a rich history that dates back to the time when the Portuguese ruled the coastal areas of India. Since trade ships were their main source of income, they wanted to have complete control over the ports. The main purpose of building Mormugao Fort was to protect the port and harbor. 

In 1624, the Portuguese started constructing a town in this area. However, many viceroys thought the area was too small & moved back to Old Goa. The history of Fort Mormugao changed in the 17th century when the Marathas took control of the fort from the Portuguese. After a few years, the Portuguese regained possession. Today, the ruins of Mormugao Fort tell the fascinating stories of its past and heritage.
