Reis Magos Fort in India sits on a hill, but the current structure is not the original one. The first fort was built in 1493 by the Adil Shahi Sultanate of Bijapur as a military outpost. After the Portuguese defeated the Sultanate in 1551, they constructed the fort we see today, which served as the main defense for Velha Goa, the capital at that time. The fort was expanded several times and was fully completed in 1707.
By the early 1900s, the fort no longer held military importance and was turned into a jail until 1993. Over time, it was damaged by monsoon rains, floods, & invasions. However, it has since been restored & now operates as a cultural center along with the nearby Reis Magos Church, attracting many tourists who want to explore its history and beauty.
