The temple has been visited by millions of people since its inception in 1486. It is believed that Lord Vishnu’s vehicle Garuda flew here from Mount Kailash to collect his weapons before returning to heaven. This legend led to naming Badrinath as ‘Dwarka’ or ‘Vishnu’s Fortress’.

Badrinath Temple History

As per Vedic scriptures, there’s a mention of the deity Badrinath presiding at that place and is been believed that the Badrinath shrine was worshipped since the Vedic period. The temple was a Buddhist shrine till the 8th century and later Adi Shankaracharya converted it into a Hindu temple. And that is why the architecture of the temple resembles the architecture of Buddhist temples especially the brightly coloured facade. It is also been said that Adi Shankaracharya, the Vedic author and scholar lived 6 months in Badrinath and another 6 months in Kedarnath. Hindu devotees believe that Adi Shankar found the deity of Badrinath in the Alaknanda River and placed it in a cave near the Tapt Kund Hot Springs.

Badrinath Architecture

The temple is built in the Chalukya style of architecture. It has a raised platform with a flight of steps leading to it. The temple has a pyramidal roof and its base is made of granite. As stated that Badrinath Temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD, and one believes Lord Vishnu manifested himself as a deity here in this spot. History says that Shankaracharya discovered a black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda river. The temple has 3 structures including the worship hall, convention hall and sanctum area. The brightly painted facade resembles a Buddhist temple and is built of stone and has windows.
