The temple was a Buddhist shrine till the 8th century and later Adi Shankaracharya converted it into a Hindu temple. And that is why the architecture of the temple resembles the architecture of Buddhist temples especially the brightly coloured facade. It is also been said that Adi Shankaracharya, the Vedic author and scholar lived 6 months in Badrinath and another 6 months in Kedarnath. Hindu devotees believe that Adi Shankar found the deity of Badrinath in the Alaknanda River and placed it in a cave near the Tapt Kund Hot Springs.

History says that Shankaracharya discovered a black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda river. The temple has 3 structures including the worship hall, convention hall and sanctum area. The brightly painted facade resembles a Buddhist temple and is built of stone and has windows.
