Established by Adi Shankaracharya during the 8th century, the Devprayag Temple is one of the most important religious places for Hindus in India. Located in the district of Tehri Garhwal in Uttarakhand, the temple is the confluence of two holy rivers – the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda, which are merging to form the Ganga. The temple is associated with the times of Ramayana when Lord Rama performed penance to get off the curse of killing Ravana.
When Lord Rama was worshipping the deity and offering his prayers in the Devprayag waters, Pushpamala came and rescued Lord Rama. At the same time, Makara was troubling Rama while he was performing penance, so he killed her with his sword. Later after killing Makara, the sword of Lord Rama went to heaven. Since then, the place is famous as Prayaga and now called Devprayaga Temple.
The history of the Devprayag Temple is believed to be as old as the Vedic period. According to mythology, the temple is believed to be related to the Ramayana times and came into existence between the 9th and 10th centuries. Originally, the temple is believed to be found by the Adi Shankaracharya and was later expanded by the Garhwal Dynasty. As time passed by, many other rulers made their contributions as well for its expansion. King Sahaj Pal from another dynasty donated the bell in 1551 while some donated doorways and other artistic paintings. The temple has also gone through a major earthquake in 1893 and was then built by the local dynasties of the region. Now the Devprayag Temple is maintained by the Government of Uttarakhand.
The architecture of the temple is simple yet impressive. The temple is built in the traditional north Indian style, with a Shikhar that rises up to a height of 60 feet. The main shrine of the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati, with idols of both deities enshrined inside. There are many other smaller shrines as well as Goddess Sita, Lord Hanuman, and Adi Shankar around the central shrine. The temple is located at a height of 2,028 ft from sea level.
The best time to visit the Devprayag Temple is during the months of March to May and September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant and the temple is also a great time to witness the aarti and puja ceremonies that are held here.
