Constructed between the 9th and 11th centuries by the highly rich Katyuri Kings, Gopinath Temple in Gopeshwar is one of the most revered and ancient temples in India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be one of the twelve Jyotirlingas or the manifestations of Lord Shiva.
According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Shiva threw his trident to kill Kamadeva, the lord of love when he attempted to disrupt Shiva’s meditation. It is also believed that Kamadeva was turned into ashes after his wife requested and worshipped Lord Shiva so that he could come back to life. Seeing her devotion, Lord Shiva assured his wife that Kamadeva will get his life back. The same trident is still there in the temple’s courtyard and visitors around the country come here to offer prayers to Lord Shiva.
The temple has many interesting stories associated with it. As per the mythology, it is been said that Lord Shiva hurled his trident over the Lord of Love, Kamadeva as he tried to disrupt his meditation. Some say that the trident has been at that place for years and it turned Kamadeva into ashes. When Kamadeva’s wife came to know about this, she worshipped Lord Shiva and request her husband’s life back. Impressed with her devotion, Lord Shiva assured her husband Kamadeva life. The trident was said to be 5m long and is still placed in the temple’s courtyard.
