About Jageshwar Temple
The Jageshwar Temple is a famous temple located in the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. This beautiful place is dedicated to Lord Shiva (considered to be the “lord of the jungle” and protector of all lives). This temple was built by the Katyuri dynasty kings, who were also responsible for building many other temples across Uttarakhand. History Of Jageshwar Temple
The name Jageshwar means the “valley of gods”, which is where the temple stands today. Jageshwar temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is situated in the Almora district and is affiliated with Hinduism. Earlier, the temple was a centre of migrants and monks who were shifted towards mountainous regions later on. Although the dates are not specific, ASI’s reports say that the Jageshwar temple is around 2500 years old.
You can have a glimpse of the inscriptions on the mouldings, pilasters, walls, and pillars. Around 12 temples are dedicated to lord Shiva. Its origin is around the 7th to 14th century. Jageshwar temple is a collection of 100 stone temples which are completely devoted to Lord Shiva.
Architectural Details Of Jageshwar Temple
The architecture of this temple is typical for temples built during that time period, with a central tower surrounded by four smaller towers on each side. The main entrance is located at the front of the central tower, while several other entrances are located at each of its sides. These entrances are all decorated with intricate carvings depicting various scenes from mythology.
The temple is elevated up to a height of 1870 metres and spread over 3.5 kilometres of area. It reflects the Nagara style of architecture. The outer walls have pillars with inscriptions on them that read “Jageshwar Mahadev”. The main entrance faces east and is flanked by two bronze statues of lions mounted on elephants which stand guard over visitors entering the premises. There is a red stone pillar as well for human and spiritual figures in the Jageshwar temple.
The main temple complex includes four large halls or mandapas – one for Lord Shiva (Jageshwar), another for Lord Vishnu (Rajarajeshwar), another for Lord Brahma (Vishnupad), and another for Lord Ganesh (Ganesh Griva). There are also two small shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi.
