The first human ever to find this cave was the King of the Sun Dynasty, Raja Rituparna who visited here during the Treta Yuga. While Rituparna was in the forests of the Himalayas, he was attracted by a deer which ran deep inside the woods. The King tried finding him but was unable to and fell asleep. He had a dream of deer asking not to chase him. He woke up and went to the cave where a guard was standing. The guard allowed him entrance and the moment he entered inside he met Sheshnag who further took him inside the cave. Sheshnag carried Riuparna on its hood and he was surprised by the marvels of 33 deities including Lord Shiva. After the King’s visit, the cave was closed for ages and reopened in Kali Yuga which was founded by Adi Shankaracharya.
Today, it is worshipped as a Patal Bhuvaneshwar Temple and is believed to be as old as the Earth. It is also said that it has a hidden route to Mount Kailash and Pandavas with their wife Draupadi meditated here in front of Shiva before heading to the Himalayas. It has been said that every Hindu God can be found here and offering prayers here is equal to the Char Dham Yatra.
