Surkanda Devi Temple was built to mark the significance of Goddess Sati’s head falling here. It became one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. Hindu mythology says that this temple was formed when Goddess Sati burnt herself in her father Daksha’s yajna place. Daksha embarrassed Sati and Shiva by not inviting them. Sati felt very bad and sacrificed herself there itself. Daksha did not like Shiva and did not want Sati to marry him as well. Lord Vishnu cut off Sati’s body into 51 pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra and wherever the body parts fell, they became the Shaktipeeths. The earlier name of this temple was Sirkhanda, and now it is called “Surkanda”
