Tungnath Temple is one of the most popular temples in Uttarakhand. It is located in Gairsain and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is around 1000 years old and is one of the highest temples in the world. Not just this, it is the highest of the Panch Kedar as well.
As the Pandavas started their journey after winning the Kurukshetra war and defeating all their cousins, Lord Shiva became angry about all these deaths. When the Pandavas came to meet Lord Shiva, he converted himself into a bull out of anger and disappeared into the ground after scattering all his body parts which fell at various places.
Pandavas built a temple here to worship Lord Shiva and please him. The head of Tungnath Temple appeared at Rudranath, the hump appeared at Kedarnath, the stomach and navels were found in Madhyamaheshwar, his jattaein appeared at Kalpeshwar, and his bahu was found in Tungnath. The meaning of Tung in Tungnath temple means “Arms” and “Nath” means Lord Shiva.
It is a lavish temple made up of stones on which beautiful decorations have been done. There is paintwork on the tall towers on the exterior as well. On the top of the highest dome at this temple, there is a wooden stage which has sixteen openings. Stone slabs have been used to make the roof of the temple, and an image of Nandi is placed on the entrance. Furthermore, Ashtadhatu is placed inside the main chamber which is made of eight metals. Images of Pandavas and four other Kedar shrines are also present inside the temple.
