The first and the oldest Jyotirlinga in India, Shree Somnath Jyotirling Temple was first built by Lord Soma out of sandalwood, the Moon-god. It is believed that this Shiva Jyotirlinga was destroyed and rebuilt several times. After several reconstructions, the final building was built by Mahipala Deva, the Solanki king of Gujarat in 1308 and the lingam was later placed by his son Khengara between 1331-1351.
