Latest Updates On Evacuation Flights From Ukraine To India

5th Flight with 249 Indians Lands in Delhi

Operation Ganga Update: 9 evacuation flights took off from Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Romania on Mar 2, Wednesday. The total number of evacuated Indians will soon reach more than 3,000 on Mar 4. Six more evacuation flights are under process and are expected to depart shortly.

The Indian Government has started “Operation Ganga” to save helpless Indian citizens in Ukraine. The evacuation process for Indians in Ukraine continues as 9 flights have already been taken off from Budapest, Slovakia, Poland, Bucharest, and Romania on the evening of Mar 2nd. More flights are scheduled and are expected to reach by Mar 4.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, Civil Aviation Minister, tweeted on Mar 3 that they are scheduling 6 flights on Wednesday from Bucharest to Delhi and Mumbai. These evacuation flights are expected to carry around 1200 Indian students. He also showed his gratitude to Air India, Indigo Airlines and Air India Express for working round the clock with them to speed up the evacuation process.  

General Vijay Kumar Singh tweeted on Mar 3 after meeting Indian students in Budomierz, Poland-Ukraine border. He stated that students were exhausted but they were glad that they were saved and will soon reach their respective homes. Later, food supplies, first aid kits, and other necessities were provided to them for their journey to India ahead.

3 More Airlines Joined Operation Ganga – More Flights Scheduled

To speed up the evacuation process, Indigo, Spicejet and Air India Express joined “Operation Ganga”  to evacuate Indians trapped in war-ravaged Ukraine. 

Meanwhile, Indigo Airlines is working towards bringing back Indians safely and has announced 2 flights using A321 aircraft. These two evacuation flights will be operated via Bucharest, Budapest, Romania, and Hungary via Istanbul.

As per the PMO sources, the following aviation officials will take care of the evacuation process of the above-mentioned cities: 

  • Jyotiraditya Scindia will look for Romania and Moldova.
  • Kiren Rijiju will take care of flights going from Slovakia.
  • Hardeep Singh Puri has been assigned the responsibility of flights from Hungary.
  • V. K. Singh will be in Poland to take care of the evacuation.

Alternate Train Route Identified For Evacuation

To save the Indian nationals, the Govt. of India has established an alternate train route from western Ukraine city, Uzhhorod to Budapest. The Indian Embassy in Ukraine has stated via Twitter that Indian citizens living in Ukraine shouldn’t move to any border post without first coordinating with Indian officials using the helpline numbers.

It stated that “the situation at different border checkpoints can be sensitive” and that the Embassy was working with embassies in neighbouring countries to coordinate evacuations of citizens.

According to the Indian Embassy in Ukraine, it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to assist those Indian nationals crossing border checkpoints without intimation.

The Government has set up 24×7 Control Centres to save Indian nationals who have reached the border points of Hungary, Romania, Poland, and the Slovak Republic.
