Air India Starts First-Ever Nonstop Service From Mumbai To San Francisco

Effective 15th December 2022, Air India launches its inaugural non-stop service between Mumbai and San Francisco, following the introduction of its thrice weekly flights between Bengaluru and the same destination. The first flight, AI 179, departed from Mumbai Airport on Thursday, at 2:30 pm and is expected to arrive at San Francisco Airport at 5 pm local time on the same day.

The Mumbai-San Francisco route is to be followed by more international connections originating from Mumbai, including Mumbai-New York City (JFK), Mumbai-Frankfurt, and Mumbai-Paris. Additionally, the airline will be introducing additional domestic flights from the Indian city.

The Boeing 777-200LR aircraft will operate the Mumbai-San Francisco route three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Air India has promised further development of Mumbai as an international and domestic hub.

At a virtual inauguration ceremony, Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya M Scindia and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced an increase in Air India’s frequency of non-stop flights between India and the US. With the addition of 40 flights per week, Air India will now operate non-stop services from Mumbai to Newark, Delhi to New York, Newark, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Chicago, and from Bengaluru to San Francisco.

Speaking at the event, Scindia expressed his enthusiasm for the transformative potential of India’s Civil Aviation sector, noting that the country is already the third-largest civil aviation market in the world with a 10.6% CAGR growth over the past decade. Shinde, for his part, underscored the government’s commitment to the sector, highlighting plans to build more airports and helipads throughout Maharashtra.
